Smiling Wheels-2018

The cool Sunday morning of 21st January, 2018 dawned in Ahmedabad with excited children having Down Syndrome and their families flocking to Law Garden for their special fun filled event – ‘Smiling Wheels-2018’. The 130 registered participants ranged in age from less than 2yrs to 35yrs, came from all over Gujarat.
Organised by Down Syndrome Welfare Club, supported by Special Olympics Bharat, Gujarat Team, this was a unique Cyclothon for all kids, teens and adults with DS. Youngsters from some city colleges and from the Gujarat University very enthusiastically turned up to help us manage the show!
The event started with registrations, distribution of kits and a band of our kids leading a walk around the Garden. Excited kids, families and well wishers joined the walk and spread the message of inclusion and abilities of our children. Morning walkers, curious passers-by and members of the public interacted with the team and children and heartily extended their support.

The cycling event began with the youngest participants taking on the road on tricycles, riding toys and walkers cheered by everyone around! They were followed by the young participants who rode cycles with support and showed their newly acquired skill. They were supported, helped, cheered and motivated by the volunteers, parents and onlookers. Most of them cycled harder and longer in the cheering and surprised even their families with their stamina! Finally the independent cyclists got ready and cycled towards their goal. Their confidence in cycling and enthusiasm in participation motivated parents of younger kids to raise the bar, and believe in the abilities of, and the possibilities for their child with the same condition. As the children finished cycling, they were welcomed into the garden. The volunteers were ready with balloons, games and music. The colourful gathering and the excitement created a lovely festive atmosphere. The next hour or more was spent playing interesting group games, resting in the warm sun and finally dancing with the young enthusiastic dance troupe from Dharohar Kathak Dance academy. The music loving children of all ages swayed to the beats of popular songs and had a gala time! The families interacted among themselves and made new friends over a nice hot lunch served by the Special Olympics team
